American scientists have created a special new species of animal: a mammoth mouse. The name says it all: it is a cross between a mammoth and a mouse.
The animal looks mostly like a mouse, but has characteristics of a mammoth. For example, it has a woolly coat, and it can withstand cold very well. Just like a mammoth.
To create this new animal, the scientists inserted DNA from a dead mammoth into a regular mouse.
According to the scientists, this experiment has an important goal. They want to bring back the mammoth. This species became extinct about 10,000 years ago. The idea is to put mammoth DNA into an elephant. This animal is descended from the mammoth.
The scientists then want to release the animals in the North Pole. According to the scientists, this could help combat climate change.
Criticism
However, there is also a lot of criticism of this experiment. According to some scientists, it is not that easy to bring back a mammoth.
