Hello, I’m Jay! I’m neither a native Dutch speaker, nor even a fluent Dutch speaker. But I am on a journey to improve my Dutch, and I want to share with you the Anki flashcards I put together to help myself learn.

This is purely a personal project, and a labor of love and curiousity.

Who Can Use this Site?

You should have the basics of Dutch grammar down, and be ready to start building your vocabulary. This might be a high A2 level or a low B1 level, whatever makes you feel comfortable.

Each post comes with both Anki decks and a file with the text I used to generate the Anki decks, so you can create your own decks for another flashcard program if you would like.

How it Works

1. I find a short and relatively easy web page or article I want to adapt.
2. I go through the text and make an English translation so I understand everything.
3. I make up vocabulary flashcards for the words I want to study.
4. Then I make a “Sentences Challenge” where I can try my hand at using the vocabulary in full sentences.
5. When I’m done, I put the vocabulary and “sentence challenge” decks on this site for everyone to enjoy.

What Kind of Decks are There?

For each article, I currently post two kinds of decks:

• A vocabulary deck. This deck gives you a vocabulary word and an example sentence and asks you to type out the meaning/translation of the word. The deck contains both Dutch-to-English and English-to-Dutch cards. Each word has audio for the Dutch so you can practice your pronunciation.
• A sentence challenge deck. After you’ve studied the vocabulary deck, you might want to try your hand at constructing example sentences with the vocabulary words. This deck also has Dutch-To-English and English-to-Dutch cards, plus an additional listening challenge where you only get the audio and you have to type out the Dutch sentence from what you hear.

More Information About the Site

Warning: there will definitely be mistakes in the decks, so your mileage may vary. This is hobby for me, so I don’t always have time to verify and update everything. I encourage you to delete or alter cards that don’t work well for your learning needs.

Also, I don’t assume you’ve been following me the whole time, so some decks may include duplicates of words that you’ve already seen. Please feel free to delete those if the refresher isn’t useful to you.

Everything on this site is Creative Commons, so you can adapt and reuse everything, but not for commercial purposes, and I ask that you link back to this site in any adaptations you make. If you make your changes public, they need to be under a license with the same freedoms that this website’s content has.
